It’s been killing me the last couple of weeks not being on the water. Too much traveling and work! I finally had a chance to get out on Jacomo for the majority of the afternoon beginning around 3pm.
I launched from the north marina and began fishing two coves south. Last year at this time, the water was crystal clear where you could see 10 feet down early in the morning. The water was definitely clear this time as well. You could see about 5-6 feet down.
The fishing action was very slow for a long time. I boated one small bass and then made my way north. I rigged some crappie rods and messed around in some brush piles on the west side of the lake leading into the spillway area, but didn’t have a bite.
Eventually, I trolled my way across the lake to the east and landed one small white on a chartreuse flicker shad.
Ligget Cove produced several bass in the backs of the secondary coves using topwater. Focusing on shallow, rocky banks was key. A black popper worked starting after 5pm and then I switched to a black double buzzbait and landed a couple more bass in Sailboat cove.
The last hour of my trip I moved south and back to the east side of the lake in what I call the “fork” cove. It was extremely stained before you reached the fork and I didn’t get a bite on topwater. I did see some surfacing, though.
The water temperature started at 73 degrees, but was down to 70 by the time I quit at 8:30pm. The clarity was very good on the main lake, but the backs of coves were stained significantly.
A Ned rig, spinnerbait, swimbait, and finesse jig produced no fish the entire afternoon.
