Longview Lake Fishing Report June 14, 2019

After traveling to Peoria, IL for 3 days and then Wichita, KS for 2 days, you could say I was ready to be on the water Friday night. Conditions were very windy (out of the south/southwest), but mostly clear with isolated storms around the area that never made it to the lake during the trip.

My dad and I hopped in the truck with a goal of finding a walleye, which has been a lot easier said than done on Longview Lake.

From what the local biologist has told me, June is supposedly a very good month to catch walleyes on the lake. He also stated they can be found surprisingly shallow.

I spoke with an angler on the water a year or so back who had a stringer of walleyes to show me. He reiterated the same. June was his favorite month to jig minnows or nightcrawlers.

We jigged nightcrawlers along the red path and noticed other boats fishing the same path drifting from south to north with the south wind.

Our trip on the water started a little after 6:30pm. The clarity was still very bad. You could maybe see 6 inches down. Very muddy. The temperature was sitting around 74 degrees and dropped slightly as the evening went on.

To start, we targeted the shallow, rocky flats in and around the danger buoys near the marina. First, we trolled, then we moved to jigging nightcrawlers. It was very windy, but an 1/8th oz jig head tipped with half a nightcrawler still got to the bottom fairly well.

Eventually, we moved to the south part of the lake where we continued jigging. Overall, it was a slow night with only a few drum to show for our efforts. They are still a fun fighting fish!

The hunt for Longview walleye continues, but I will continue to post my experiences here as a tool for others to figure out what to do or what not to do. Hopefully it will help others piece things together to find some success!

Learning what it takes to find and catch them is what makes it so fun!
